About Me

About Me

My name is Norman and I have been a document controller for 15 years. During this time, I have gained extensive experience working on a variety of projects in different construction industries.

As a document controller, my role is to ensure that all project documents are properly managed and controlled throughout their lifecycle. This includes everything from creating and maintaining document registers to managing the review and approval process. It may not sound glamorous, but it is a critical function that keeps projects running smoothly.

Experience as a Document Controller

Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience working on diverse projects in the construction industry, encompassing areas such as railway infrastructure, road construction, mechanical works, and facilities management. One particularly noteworthy project I participated in was a large-scale railway undertaking that spanned several years and involved numerous stakeholders.

In my role as the document controller for this project, I assumed the responsibility of managing a vast number of documents, ensuring their thorough review and approval prior to uploading them onto the document management system and disseminating them to the project team.

Importance of Document Control

Document control is a critical function in many industries, including construction, engineering, and manufacturing. Proper document control ensures that all project documents are properly managed and controlled throughout their lifecycle, from creation to disposal. This helps to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

In fact, studies have shown that poor document control can lead to significant delays and cost overruns on projects. By contrast, effective document control can help to reduce these risks and ensure that projects are completed successfully. As a document controller, my skills and expertise have contributed to the success of many projects over the years.

Challenges Faced

As with any job, being a document controller comes with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is managing large volumes of documents on complex projects. This requires a high level of organization and attention to detail, as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Another challenge is ensuring that all stakeholders are aware of the importance of document control and are willing to follow the procedures that have been put in place. This can be particularly challenging when dealing with external stakeholders who may not be familiar with the project's document control processes.

Skills and Qualifications

As a document controller, I have developed a wide range of skills and qualifications that are essential to my role. These include strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure.

I am also proficient in a variety of document control software programs, including OpenText Documentum, Oracle Project Unifier, Aconex, and Sharepoint.

Conclusion

In conclusion, being a document controller is not just about managing documents. It is about ensuring that projects are completed successfully, on time, and within budget.

My experience and expertise as a document controller have allowed me to contribute to the success of many projects over the years.
